ArmorUp Campaign is a battle cry and a movement to get people to change their lives through diet, exercise and lifestyle BEFORE a life threatening illness like cancer hits. My fight taught me that working out isn’t about the skinny jeans. It is about showing up fit to the fight. Before you say “Not me” I’ll share some statistics on why most people will face a fight of some sort in their lifetime.
Cancer wasn’t supposed to happen to me. I was a national fitness & health reporter, a green drinking-clean eating, yoga enthusiast and runner… but it did. That hard work wasn’t a waste of time. It saved me. I showed up to the fight so fit that I got the strongest dose of chemo possible while others roamed the halls of Johns Hopkins with 1/4 the dose of chemo I was getting. I was baffled when I noticed the IV bag of chemo hanging around each patients IV stand was different. Some were smaller and some were huge bags. Why couldn’t we all fight the same? When doctors sat me down and explained that each patient’s dosing was based on his or her fitness level and their overall health, I was shocked. Why? because doctors had to tip-toe around their illnesses. Their hearts weren’t strong enough to run chemo through it. Their blood pressure wasn’t safe enough to push the limits. Their weight compounded the problem. I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to 1/2 fight for his or her life. I was scared to make friends because I often lost them. I don’t want this to happen to others.
